College teacher killer given capital punishment with reprieve in Beijing

A 23-year-old college student who was accused of murdering one of his teachers intentionally was given a death penalty with a reprieve by the First Intermediate People's Court of Beijing Tuesday afternoon, court sources confirmed Wednesday morning.

The reprieve was judged mainly on the basis of the fact that the defendant, Fu Chengli, surrendered himself to the police after he committed the murder last October, the sources added.

According to the court verdict, on Oct. 28, 2008, Fu, then a student with the China University of Political Science and Law, broke into a classroom and stabbed to death Cheng Chunming, an associate professor in comparative jurisprudence. Fu believed Cheng had forced Fu's girlfriend, then a graduate student also at the university, to have sexual relationship with Cheng for academic promotion.

Fu alleged that he killed Cheng to warn any others who wanted to follow suit.

Fu was assessed to be in normal mental order when he committed the murder.

Earlier media reports said Fu's girlfriend acknowledged she had sexual relationship with Cheng, then in his mid 30s, for one year and she did it "voluntarily".

The court said there was no sufficient evidence to prove that Cheng had any "wrongdoing" in the case.

After the verdict, Fu did not say whether he would appeal or not.

The verdict did not involve the civil aspect, as no civil lawsuit had been filed by Cheng's family members.
