Majority of Americans oppose Afghanistan war: poll

More than half of Americans oppose the Afghanistan war now, according to a CNN poll released on Tuesday.

The survey showed that about 57 percent of 1,010 Americans polled oppose to the eight-year-old war, the highest level ever, compared to 54 percent in July and 46 percent in April.

It also found that only 40 percent of interviewees said they believed the war is winnable.

The poll was released as President Barack Obama's government was expected to review an assessment report authored by the U.S. top commander in Afghanistan, Army Gen. Stanley A. McChrystal.

The general said in a statement released on Monday that "the situation in Afghanistan is serious but success is achievable and demands a revised implementation strategy, commitment and resolve, and increased unity of effort."

The assessment, as he said, seeks to implement Obama's strategy "to reduce the capability and will of the insurgents, Al-Qaeda and transnational extremists" as well as develop Afghan forces and improve governance and development.
