Polanski’s bail bid rejected

Fugitive director Roman Polanski has lost his appeal to be released from a Swiss jail. He has 10 days to appeal.

In a serious setback in his battle against extradition, Switzerland's top criminal court rejected Polanski’s appeal to be released from prison, citing the "high" risk that the director would try to flee again.

His proposal of bail, house arrest and electronic monitoring failed to sway the tribunal.

In the 17-page verdict, Federal Criminal Court said "The appellant has already once in 1978 eluded American criminal proceedings by traveling to Europe."

Polanski was arrested September 26 for his decades-old child sex case when he arrived in Zurich to receive a lifetime achievement award.

Polanski was initially indicted on six felony counts, including rape by use of drugs, child molesting and sodomy in 1977. He was accused of plying a 13-year-old girl with Champagne Champagne and part of a Quaalude pill during a modeling shoot and raping her.

He pleaded guilty and requested a lesser charge of illegal sexual intercourse and fled despite of the legal dispute over his sentence.
