Trends from New York Fashion Week

At the New York Fashion Week, it was a kaleidoscope of color at the Marc Jacobs and Betsey Johnson shows on Tuesday. Then on Wednesday, Philip Lim and Georgina Chapman showed their latest collections that they say were influenced by the arts.

For Spring 2010, Marc Jacobs unveiled a collection of bright florals, checks, spots, and geometrics combined with sneakers and bow-wraps worn in the hair.

The look was reminiscent of the 80s, with a hint of grungy 90s plaid.

Over at the Plaza Hotel, designer Betsey Johnson ditched the traditional runway in favor of a party-type atmosphere.

With the theme "One Night Stand", the evening felt more like a rock concert than a fashion show.

Fashion is art.. is fashion according to Phillip Lim, the man behind 3.1. The designer unveiled his collection for Spring 2010, loosely titled 'Collage'.

Describing his use of colors as "classic with a sense of madness," Phillip Lim's designs featured a palette ranging from lipstick-red to lilac to amethyst to chartreuse, subdued with navy, ecru, and black.

The designer says he was inspired after a visit to a Pablo Picasso art exhibition. The master's primitive use of lines and color, and the muted colors struck the designer.

Marchesa, who is known for her jaw-dropping gowns favored by celebrities and socialites, was also inspired by the arts, but of a more theatrical nature. Infused with Asian overtones, the collection's theme is Madame Butterfly, which is about the multiple layers of love.

Many of the models were Asian and the gowns had distinct Eastern influences.

New York Fashion Week turns the lights off its runway on Thursday.
