France to raise retirement age to 63 by 2030

The French government is planning to gradually raise the statutory retirement age to 63 by 2030, which has triggered anger and anxiety among workers, national media reported Monday.

The government plans to postpone retirement age to 61 years in 2015, then to 62 in 2020 and finally to 63 in 2030, Le Monde newspaper reported. The current retirement age in France is 61 years and half.

The policy has provoked debate in private and public sectors.

Like many of its European peers, which are troubled by the aging of population and rising of government debts, France has speeded up its pension reform to find a quick way out of the economic depression.

President Nicolas Sarkozy has announced that he intended to raise the national retirement age sometime this summer.

But a ViaVoice survey has shown that 62 percent of workers regarded the current pension system "an asset of France" worthy preserving.

On Saturday, hundreds of thousands of French people took to the streets to voice their concerns over the country's economy. The planned pension reform was one major target of the mass demonstration.
